Please do not be alarmed by your lack of memory. You have installed, and have chosen to run, an amnesia mental program. You should have seen a dialog box in your field of vision confirming that the program is running. The string of letters you spoke upon regaining consciousness was a code to confirm to our servers that your program is running correctly. The string of numbers and letters you hear being read in the background is a code provided by us to let your amnesia program know that you are still connected to our VR simulation. This code will continue to be read in the background for the entire time you are with us.
You are currently experiencing a VR simulation controlled exclusively by our servers. You are connected via a high-encryption connection, using a special, tamper-proof Mental Stimulator. You are connecting from your own home or office. Should your connection to us be cut off for any reason, you will stop hearing the connection code and your Amnesia program will automatically wipe your current memories and return you to normal. Your mental stimulator is set to drop you out of VR should it sense any potential danger, e.g. pain, trouble breathing, a fire alarm, etc. If you followed our instructions, then you should have placed a can of nutritional supplement within arms reach before entering VR. If you have done so, then every two hours an automated system will cause you to take and drink from the can. You will not be aware of this food consumption, but it should prevent you from becoming overly hungry.
You are a freelance contractor, providing anonymous and confidential services to our company. Because of the extremely sensitive nature of the work you are doing, you have been required to blank out all personal memories. This is so that you cannot try to communicate personally identifying information to our employees and so that your work will not be biased by personal allegiances. We also require that any memories you accrue while working on this project are wiped out immediately upon your severing your connection with this server. To reiterate: you should remember nothing about who you are while working here, and after you finish work, all memories of your work here will be destroyed. There is no way for anyone besides us to communicate with you while you are working, nor for you to communicate anything you’ve learned here to anyone besides us.
Although your personal memories have been temporarily blocked, you should have access to all abstract and procedural knowledge, e.g. who was the first president of the US, how to ride a bike. We have been provided with a complete assessment of your skills and please be assured that anything we ask you to do is within your current skill set. You may not know that you know how to do it, but when you try to do it you will find yourself able.
During your work here today, you will not be interacting with any other person, nor will you receive any feedback on the work you are doing. Again, this is because of the extremely sensitive nature of the work. Although you will not see or talk to anyone, your work will be reviewed for quality and accuracy.
You will be working 8 hours today, with two five-minute breaks and one half-hour break. An automated system will alert you when it is time for a break to begin or end. We cannot let you leave the simulation during your breaks, but we have installed several relaxing recreational programs such as Flying Above the Clouds and Half-Grav Obstacle Course. You can access these from your normal interface.
Your workspace is set up using standard VR workspace controls, which you are familiar with. All of your controls are completely firewalled from internet access. Do not try to hack the system or you will be immediately dismissed, your connection will be severed and you will not be paid for today’s work.
Please be aware that everything happening here today was chosen freely by you. By Federal law of the country in which you reside, all amnesia programs must be designed so that they can only activate with the user's explicit approval. You can never be forced or tricked into going into amnesia mode.
Anonymous amenesia-protected work of this sort pays quite well. We know that being in a strange place with no memory can be disconcerting, but you have been given an excellent economic opportunity, so please try to concentrate on your work and do the highest quality of work you can.
